Hailing from Los Angeles does not bind her to any zip code. Devi Dev ( Devon Angelica Brown ) continues to define what it means to be smart classy fem fetale launching pad of media. I first heard her riding through the streets of Houston while tuned into 97.9 FM. Being from New Orleans it was refreshing to vibe with a female who was an implant like myself. She made you feel at home between every song. I knew then I was listening to a star on the mic. She did not dissapoint her growing audience either. Devi Dev impacted the vast ratio of Cowboys and Cowgirls all while keeping her West Coast threads in tact. The diversity of her range is hard not to notice. Not only did Texas love her but one of the Texans was blown away as well. NFL Left Tackle, Duane Brown evolved her into a beautiful bride and now she glows with marital bliss that inspires romantic hopefuls all over.
Devi Dev is very active in giving back too. In 2013 she co-founded Power Play Women, a non-profit that pairs young career driven women with high level mentors. Something that is very near and dear to her heart. She is NOWHERE close to slowing down so it was a special treat to " ketchup " with Devi Dev Brown and allow her to spread the " mustard " here at LipServiceInk.com Literacy Magazine.
1. Who inspires you most and why ?
Oprah for her ability to connect with people of all walks of life. What she is currently doing with her network in terms of helping ppl find, grow and empower themselves through certain show programing (like Master Class, Supersoul Sunday, Our America and Iyanla Fix my life) is so impressive. Also, Ryan Seacrest. The way he grew his brand from night jock on the radio to Television host and now media mogul is aspirational!
2. How did you know the world of media was your oyster ?
It's something I always knew since I was a child. I loved connecting with people. learning about them. being a sounding board and sharing myself and my life. Once I got to college and began radio and music label internships it became easy to transition and be given opportunities to rise to the occasion.
3. What do you love most about talking to stars ?
Getting to know the things that make us all the same. Wheather I'm talking to an A- lister or connecting with an everyday listener we all have things that bind us and I believe it's those stories that are worth telling. Even when I interviewing an artists and talking about something pretty ordinary (for them) like their latest album, I try to find an edge to it. A way to connect them to the rest of us. A way to make them relatable and accessible.
4. Confess to me your favorite book and why you love it so much ?
I go in and out of what my favorite book is. For the past couple of years it has been Outliers by Malcolm Gladwell. I think he is amazing as an author. The way he makes somewhat complex studies and thought available in a way we can easily translate to our own experience is fascinating to me. I constantly revisit Outliers. When my future kids reach highschool I'm going to have them read every book he's done and do quasi book reports on them.
5. What's your favorite color ?
Cobalt Blue. Its such a pure and striking color. I painted my front door this color. Makes me happy to walk in and out of it every day. Got my Le Creuset pots and pans in this color too.
6. Where do you enjoy traveling to most and why ?
Lately Cabo San Lucas. Its such a quick flight at around 2.5 hours from both L.A and Houston (my two home bases) yet you feel so far away once your there. I love the contrast of desert meets ocean. Cactus meets ocean. It's like survival meets decadence. When I'm away from California for too long, L.A is always my favorite place to travel. It's home. The weather and my history with it make me feel like i'm at my best when I'm there.
7. How do you relax ?
Driving alone is very relaxing for me. Well, as long as i'm not on the 59 or the 610 during rush hour that is. Something about the cocoon of your car while still traveling through the world does it for me. I always think best and listen to music best when I'm driving or on a plane (same method of though applies to plane travel.)
8. Where do you see the DeviDev brand in 1 year ?
Hopefully many more TV opportunities! Plus i'd like to get the mentorship program I started with a friend, PowerPlayWomen.com fully functional.
