I remember meeting her like yesterday. A beautiful woman full of life, luster and sensational snapshot creations. Her name is Monica Morgan and when she'd come to New Orleans I'd have the best gal pal fun with a daring dame who was smart and demanded attention with her camera. Working for GM Monica was there to shoot all things fly for Essence Music Festival and many more awesome events.
Then it happen... the storm came.
After Hurricane Katrina she was essential to give me an experience Id never forget. We went back directly after Katrina. When people were trying to get out... Monica Morgan wanted in. All the way from Detroit - Monica went from plane then car to on foot. Imagine a female on her own from out of town with a camera. It wasn't safe. She needed someone who knew the city. She picked me to be her eyes and ears. It would be the most challenging gig Id ever take to date. Emotions ran high to see people just " shooting " my hometown in its worst light. It was the only time my professional state of mind was altered. I saw my home still swimming in 5 feet of water and lost it.
Monica Morgan helped me keep it together. I was 25, stressed and really out of it. She was so calm and level headed. Don't know what I would have done if she wasn't there. It was dark and no one was there to look out for the press. Everyone was on their own. Monica took the best shots in the worst elements. Monica made history with those pictures.
So if you're in Detroit and want to know where the real happening is... follow the sharp lense of International Photographer, Monica Morgan ...
Before Hurricane Katrina she was a great friend, After the storm she became my best friend.
