This column is long overdue. I've met so many great people on this humble journey and its a dream ride I'm proud to share. The journey isn't over which is why this column has to be called.. " Friggin Awesome " .
Lets start with the coolest neighbor a growing artsy gal can have. Over 10 years ago my life became a bit more Friggin Awesome. I met a woman who'd change the way I write.
Her name is Karin Hopkins. Between writing poems and teaching my Arts & Crafts to summer camp camp kids I'd find myself hanging out around the neighborhood. I shared a street with some of New Orleans' greatest people. Bank Founders, Judges, News Anchors just to name a few. Karin was the wife of Noah Hopkins and I heard nothing but great things about how cool they were.
I'd see them in newspapers attending meaningful events. Very involved in the community Karin and Noah worked with Essence Fest and more. Who knew just a few months later we'd meet through a beloved neighbor. ( Willie Craft )
Karin was one of the most cultured women I'd met in my entire life. She'd been a TV News Anchor and now rocked out one of the most noted Media / PR firm in New Orleans. Her home was stunning and her business savvy stopped me in my tracks. So cool and stylish ya know thats Karin. She inspired me to believe in what's already inside of me and trust my gut. I introduced her to my Mom and they got along too. From cooking tips to heart to hearts Mrs. Karin is still a joy to my spirit. It was on her patio I came up with my first column concept.
There with Beverly Kilborn ( former Editor of Data News Weekly ) I gave brith to " P.O.W " - Pissed Off Weekly -... I still wonder if I were anywhere else and came up with that idea would I have dismissed it and went on with my day. Karin would'nt allow you to dismiss a great idea. I was scared but with fingers crossed I went full steam ahead with my column idea and the rest is " herstory ".
Karin & Noah moved away to Alabama and it was such a lost. I missed getting on my bike (leaving my car behind) riding a few blocks into a new world. I'll never forget just how patient Karin was with me. I TALK SOO MUCH & ASK soo many questions !! Poor Karin !! lol... I hope she forgave my untamed energy.. Now that Im older I can only imagine how I worked her nerves.. All in all from Mayor's Balls to fascinating Art Exhibits, some of the most important moments in my little media career was done under the thumb of Karin.
My first column written in her beautiful garden patio. I'll never forget that. Singing into hair brushes to Stephanie Mills - I will never forget that...
This is why Karin Hopkins is soooo " Friggin Awesome ".
